«شیرین» دختر هشتسالهای است که همراه مادرش در خانهی پیرزنی به نام «احترام» زندگی میکند. مادر او مستخدم خانه است. احترام اتاقی مخصوص دارد که گهگاهی تنها در آن مینشیند و سپس آن را قفل میکند.
روزی، درِ اتاق باز میماند و شیرین از روی کنجکاوی وارد آن میشود و با صحنهای عجیب روبهرو میشود: از تابلوی کودکی احترام، مادری به همراه دو کودک—یک پسر کوچک و دختری با روبان سفید—خارج میشوند. دختر کوچک از شیرین کمک میخواهد، اما شیرین فقط میتواند دستان سرد او را لمس کند. دختر با اصرار مادر به تابلو بازمیگردد و در کنار خانوادهاش مغموم و خاموش مینشیند، و شیرین در حیرت باقی میماند.
این رمان برای نوجوانان گروه سنی «د» و «ه» (مناسب برای ۹ سال به بالا) نوشته شده است و فضایی رازآلود و خیالانگیز دارد.
