یکی بود، یکی نبود. روی زمین، جایی نه خیلی دور، نه خیلی نزدیک، جنگلی بزرگ بود. توی این جنگل هیچکس نبود؛ ولی توی آسمان، خورشید بزرگ و قشنگ میتابید. یک شیر از راه رسید. غرّشی کرد و گفت: «چه جنگل بزرگی! اینجا بهترین جا برای یک شیر قوی است. این جنگل مال من است.»
این کتاب داستان سادهای از جنگلی را روایت میکند که حیوانات مختلفی میخواهند در آن زندگی کنند. اما آیا برای همهی آنها جا هست؟ در هر صفحه، مفاهیم سادهی ریاضی و اعداد در قالب بازی نقطهای (داتتودات) به کودکان آموزش داده میشود. ده حیوان در این داستان وارد جنگل میشوند، اما به قول «شیر» هنوز هم جای خالی برای حیوانات دیگر وجود دارد.
